Today art isn't considered as important as subjects like math or science, even before it was never accentuated to be something that would give one much glory. Though now we look back on artists as geniuses who managed to write the history of their time through silly pictures and objects. While the significance of the subject has sky rocketed so much it still is something people think that it is mostly for the uneducated and the ones unable to comprehend other things.
Art is not believed to be useful to children and teens growing up other than for a past time, but it unlocks so much in the mind that a person wouldn't have thought of before. Sir Ken Robinson spoke on TED Talks of how the education system now is the same as it has ever been with some small tweaks. He stressed that kids today don’t think they’re as smart as they are because they were taught otherwise. They are taught that understanding things like math and history help to create paths and stepping stones to jobs in the 21st century, but what we are doing is taking over the jobs left for us by the last generation and the one before that and the one before that and so on.
When we were young everyone thought of the possibilities of things and wouldn't be afraid to think outside the box. There was a test taken by asking a child in kindergarten what were different uses for a paper clip and then they conducted the same test for the same person five years later and again five years late and what they saw was that the number of uses the child thought of dropped significantly throughout this time period. What this showed was that as the child grew older and became more educated their imagination and creativity leaked out because they were taught to think properly. Something that grows in children as they get older is the fear of being wrong and that constricts the amount of creativity that we let out in school or on a day to day basis.
My personal opinion on this matter would be that art is such an important part of education and it shows so many more options than a standard choice in school classes. If there is one thing that I love about being in this day and age is the freedom that we do have even with the setbacks in thought process. It combines the true depths in our minds with the knowledge we know up front. Art is its own kind of education that shows us to think less about the answer and more about the possibilities to find an answer.
